I just saw the list of dozens of cyber criminal suspects recently arrested by the US government and I’m grieving.
It includes names such as “Son of God”, “Thank You Jesus”.
I’m grieving because only recently a once thought to be wonder kid was arrested over the same crime. This was a boy who made Forbes list and was thought to be a genius until the bubble burst.
And worst still, he is Igbo; majority of the names on the list just released by the US government are Igbo.
The implication.
Every rich Igbo boy in the US or elsewhere is a suspect. Ignorant Nigerians have taken to social media to lampoon the Igbo. All manner of trash is being said about Ndigbo.
But outside there it is Nigeria that is shamed, not just Igbos. The US knows Nigeria, and not Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani. The world sees the green passport. And its holders will face greater scrutiny.
As an Igbo person, I’m ashamed. I’m disappointed. I’m grieving.
What can we do to tame the ever-growing list of our young boys and girls who have taken to cyber crime to get rich quick in the absence of paid employment and opportunities to innovate?
