Finally, Barbados Becomes A Republic, Removes Queen Elizabeth II
■ Rihanna Honoured As National Hero
Nothing is more naturally interesting when one regains freedom after years of struggle and that is exactly the present situation with the people of Barbados.
A gathered report notes that Barbados has formally affirmed itself the newest country in the world demoting Queen Elizabeth ll a the republic’s head of state at a stroke of midnight.
The event of the Caribbean island nation was attended by Prince Charles in a solemn ceremony on Tuesday.
The Royal Standard Flag was raised to Symbolize the historic handover. This also portrays that the Queen who was represented was lowered during a ceremony ushering in Dame Sandra Mason, the governor-general as the first president of Barbados.
In his acceptance speech; “I, Sandra Prunella Mason, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Barbados according to law, so help me God,” the new president said in taking the oath of office.
This historic gathering ended Britain’s centuries of influence of over 200 years since 1834 of slavery. The current era for the nation of 285,000 begins.
During the course of the presidential inaugural ceremony at Heroes Square, Bridgetown, the popular music star, Rihanna, who was born on the Island was also honoured as a National Hero.
