The United States has condemned the “senseless and brazen killings of civilians” majorly in the northern parts of Nigeria by armed bandits and others.

Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State decried the problem in a press statement on Tuesday.

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari government to act in protecting lives and properties under his watch.

While clarifying, the Secretary remarked that in recent weeks, suspected ISIS West Africa militants initiated various strikes in Borno State.

America said more than 120 civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, lost their lives.

The senior official recalled that June 9, unidentified armed bandits attacked a village in Katsina State, killing dozens.

U.S. said the horrendous crimes ensued after “the  shooting of a pastor and his pregnant wife on June 1”.

It also inferred to the slaughter of local village head, Imam and varied civilians in Taraba State during intercommunal unrest on 5 June.

The statement reflected worry that “tens of thousands of civilians” have lost their lives in recent years due to assaults by terrorist groups or criminal gangs, inter-communal violence, or their religious beliefs.

US, however, called on the Nigerian government to intensify more efforts to protect citizens and “hold those responsible accountable”

This is coming barely two weeks after the US government signed an executive order to setting up Special Envoy within troubled countries in Africa.
