The younger brother to the embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Kingsley Kanu has briefed the United Nations over his continued disappearance.

In an online teleconference on Zoom, the IPOB leader’s brother narrated to Committee on Enforced Disappearance (CED) at the ongoing UNGA 76th Session how Kanu was ‘illegally arrested, detained and tortured for over ten days by the Kenyan government.

He argued that upon Kanu arrival to the country there was no prompt of any criminal activity, warning rather he was made to pass through pains and later handed to the Nigerian government without any court hearing.

His statement partly noted” Just as we also highlighted in the 4th April 2020, the Nigerian government have it as a duty to investigate any incident of enforced disappearance. We said then there’s no indication of any investigation having credibly taken place in connection to any of the incidents and crimes listed in the report. This position still stands.

We would also through the attention of the committee to the extraordinary rendition of IPOB leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. Mr. Kanu was in Nairobi Kenya on 19 June 2021 he then disappeared for ten days during which time the family had no idea of his whereabouts before it was reported he has been sent to Nigeria.

We now understand that he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment through these 10 days and he was then out in a private jet that left Jomo Kenyatta Airport midday on 27 June 2021 and arrived in Abuja evening of the same day.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN stated at a press conference on 29 June 2021 that Mr. Kanu has been arrested through a collaborative effort of the Nigerian intelligence and security service have been brought back to Nigeria to continue facing trials and that recent steps taken by the federal government saw to the interception of the fugitive Kanu.

There was no formal legal proceedings or court hearing in Kenya. On 29 June Mr. Kanu appeared without legal representation before the Federal High Abuja on charges of terrorism”

He however reminded the committee to reconsider the movement of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria mounts to extraordinary rendition. Watch Video
