Armed Fulani Herdsmen Hit Enugu Communities Many Feared Dead
Suspected armed Fulani Herdsmen reportedly hit farm settlements in Enugu State many persons said to have been slain.
Following the Vanguard report on Saturday, the ugly attack was carried out in both Mgbuji and Ebo villages at Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The attackers arrived in the communities at about 10 am and lasted till 6 pm on Thursday.
The village Vigilante who spoke on anonymity told that number of affected persons may increase as several casualties with bullet wounds fled into bushes and are yet to be rescued.
Similarly, another personnel of the vigilante revealed the casualty figure would be up to twelve (12) noting that villagers are putting efforts to rescue missing loved ones.
The communities according to the source regret are thrown into mourning following the death of their kinsmen, adding that dwellers are scared but deserted the community.
Looking into the cause of the attack, a source said the trouble began when some cattle rearers were chased off the farmlands by Youths for allegedly destroying their cassava crops.
With regard to this, some cows were said to have been killed prompting the herders to launch a reprisal attack.
Though the spokesperson of Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, is yet to respond to enquires on this incident,
Mr. Eric Ebeh, who is the community leader in Mgbuji confirmed the ugly incident, stated that the number of victims is yet to be ascertained as youths are searching bushes.
In his words: “Up till now, palpable fear has not allowed anyone to enter the farm settlements to search for victims or ascertain the level of destruction. I am not in the village presently but I have made enquires and confirmed that there was an attack on my community.
“Some of the persons I called presented conflicting figures. While some said that six persons were allegedly killed, others put the casualty figure at seven or eight. We, are yet to know the actual number of victims of that attack,” he said.
Vanguard reported that at least, residents of these communities had suffered similar pain earlier in January this noting that three persons were killed.
